On Wednesday, October 12, the British higher education magazine Times Higher Education (THE) published the THE World University Rankings 2023.
In the rankings, KMU lay in the 601–800 band. Among national, public, and private universities in Japan, KMU ranked 11th overall, tied with other universities,1 and third in the Kansai area after Kyoto University and Osaka University. Among private universities, it reached first place, tied with another university.2

It uses the total score of 13 performance indicators across five fields – educational power (teaching), research performance, research impact (citations), international outlook, and income from industry – to measure the overall strength of universities. Compared to other rankings, it is characterized by an evaluation that emphasizes research performance and teaching. Among the performance indicators in the 2023 rankings, the university received a high evaluation for “research impact (citations).” In terms of the actual score, it came second in Japan after Yokohama City University.
